THE EXPERIMENTS OF WILLEM GUURINK
is a film (10 min. 2026) made for the exhibition The Experiments of Willem Guurink by Luuk Wilmering at the TU Delft Library

[ENG] Willem Guurink was an unconventional scientist who was far ahead of his time. In the late 1920s, Guurink began his first research into clean fuel, which led to his little known invention of the coal washing machine. Visual artist Luuk Wilmering used the historical collection of glass slides from the TU Delft and his own photographic archive to tell the life story of Willem Guurink: a visionary, unconventional, and tragic scientist who devoted his life to the quest for clean energy. Drawing on scientific discoveries, historical figures, and archival material, the video explores how scientific knowledge develops through trial and error, how ideas are remembered or forgotten, and how archives shape our understanding of the past.

[NL] Willem Guurink was een onconventionele wetenschapper die zijn tijd ver vooruit was. Eind jaren twintig begon Guurink met zijn eerste onderzoek naar schone brandstof, wat leidde tot zijn weinig bekende uitvinding: de steenkoolwasmachine. Beeldend kunstenaar Luuk Wilmering maakte gebruik van de historische collectie glasdia’s van de TU Delft en zijn eigen fotoarchief om het levensverhaal van Willem Guurink te vertellen: een visionaire, onconventionele en tragische wetenschapper die zijn leven wijdde aan de zoektocht naar schone energie. Aan de hand van wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen, historische figuren en archiefmateriaal onderzoekt de video hoe wetenschappelijke kennis zich ontwikkelt door vallen en opstaan, hoe ideeën worden herinnerd of vergeten, en hoe archieven ons begrip van het verleden vormgeven.
